Brothers from the 1990s – “What were the 90s like?”
Following the hip trend on the Insta-Tok, we created a (not yet viral) video of what Pi Lam Temple was like in the ‘90s. The youngsters don’t just know what they missed: keg parties, true beer pong (a skill sport), mattress slides, flag football domination, Hel(p) weekends, Pumpkin Pi, double-secret probation, and March Madness.
Jim Kelsh ’75 – Key to the Fraternity
Congratulations to Jim, who was recently awarded the prestigious Pi Lambda Phi Council Key! Only six PA Alpha Delta brothers have received this honor which is given for meritorious service over a number of years. Jim was instrumental in our chapter’s refounding in 2009, and has served as an officer (currently President) on the PA Alpha Delta Alumni Association since 2006. In addition to being a stalwart Pi Lam flag bearer, Jim continues to manage the execution of the Kovner Banquet working through Temple “customer service” (which should merit an award in itself), while serving as the entertaining host of the festivities. Thank you for your dedication, Jim!
Sam Cohen ’92 – Sorry, but he can’t give you seed $
Sam reached out to let us know that he was splitting his time from his Maryland home to his snow bird residence in Clearwater, Florida to be closer to his kids and grandkids. He said, “I am coming up on 20 years with New Enterprise Associates, a venture capital firm. As the CFO, I don’t make investment decisions and can’t give seed, series A, or venture growth money to any new startups run by brothers! Sorry in advance.” A wise choice.
Ajay Patel ’24 – Reporting live from Texas
Ajay has been building a respectable on-air news career in Kentucky, which took him further south to a new home deep in the heart of Texas. He recently announced, “Everything is bigger in Texas. I’m excited to be joining the NBC KPRC2 team in Houston as their newest reporter!”
Brian Booth ’17 – He means business
Congrats to Brian Booth, who was recently promoted to Account Executive, Vice President at Aon! He has also dutifully served Temple as a Director-At-Large on the Fox School of Business Alumni Association Board and recently won a second 3-year term!
Jimbo Montgomery ’01 – Encouraging the incorrigible Philly sports fans
If you’ve climbed a greased pole on Broad Street, or spent time in the Vet Stadium jail, “Jimbo” Montgomery has a podcast for you. Jimbo hosts a daily podcast called, “This Day in Philly Sports History” featuring the gut-punching lows, iconic moments, legendary characters, and unforgettable celebrations that define Philly sports. Alan Markowitz ’79 – Reflecting on his start through Pi Lam connections
Recently retired after a long and successful career in finance Alan said, “I started working in 1979 when I joined a large regional CPA firm in NJ which was led by a PA Alpha Delta brother, Eli Hoffman ’59.” When Hoffman left the firm in 1990, Alan became a partner and he joked, “I guess in their by-laws they always needed to have a Pi Lam as a partner.”
He shared a funny story about Eli. “I had been working at the firm for five years or so with Jeff Schwartz, another Temple Pi Lam, Jeff Schwartz. Eli Hoffman took us to a Temple NCAA game at the Meadowlands and at dinner, the wine was flowing. Eli was talking fondly about his memories of the fraternity and busted out in a rendition of Jolly Laddies.”
Andrew Bollinger ’11 – Law partner and Pi Lam Kingmaker
Snaps to Andrew, whose law career is soaring. He was recently named a partner at the law firm of Manley Burke, LPA in Chicago. “A-Boll” is also the Vice President of the Pi Lam International Executive Council, and was a key part of the selection committee for the new Pi Lambda Phi CEO, Ry Beck.
Steve Smith ’91 – Dogs are the best medicine
Steve recently welcomed a friendly, fuzzy face to Jefferson Health Systems, Brucey the Chocolate Lab. Brucey is the hospital system’s newest service dog. As the EVP and Chief Advancement Officer of Jefferson, Steve partnered with Leashes of Valor and other key contributors to help bring furry friends with wagging tails to support service members and their families.
Bob Pennock ’11 – Back to School
A “Temple Made” product, Bob could not resist the urge to return to his alma mater. He recently accepted a position as Senior Mechanical Engineer at Temple University, and he’s excited about the prospects of being North Philly’s “Bob the Builder.”
Nate Petonak ’21 – Eye opening developments
Congrats to Nate on attaining his degree in optometry! He recently singed on as an Optometric Technician at Hopewell and Lambertville Eye Associates.
