Ian Mentzer Educational Fund makes a big impact on a brother’s family

In 2010, Bob Mentzer ’90 lost his battle with cancer and passed into the Chapter Eternal, leaving behind his wife, Becca, and a 3 year-old son, Ian. In honor of Bob’s memory, the PA Alpha Delta Alumni Association launched a fundraising campaign for an educational fund that would benefit his son, Ian.

Bob was universally liked by the brotherhood. He fit in with all the factions in the house with his easy going personality, competitive spirit, love to laugh, and sometimes devil-may-care attitude.

Undergrads from 2010 to 2017 responded enthusiastically, hosting numerous fundraising events, and our alumni generously donated to the Ian Mentzer fund for several years.

Making higher education dreams come true

Ian graduated from Ephrata High this year Cum Laude with honors and is college-bound!

We recently heard from a grateful Becca, who was overwhelmed by the support. She said, “Ian is beyond blessed with a 529 account (a state-sponsored, tax-advantaged savings plan designed to help individuals save for college) funded in large part by the fundraising efforts of Bob’s fraternity brothers in Pi Lambda Phi. We cannot thank them all enough! This will be a blessing that keeps giving as Ian continues to follow his dreams to build a wonderful life for himself.”

PA Alpha Delta undergrads and alumni raised over $8,000 from 2010 to 2017. Bob’s family members also generously contributed to the fund.

It’s been 15 years since we started the campaign, but Becca shared how much of an impact the investment will have, “the principal the fraternity and family members raised was just over $15,000 and it has grown to almost $26,000.”

Thank you PA Alpha Delta brothers for taking care of our own

A huge round of snaps and sincere thanks to all the brothers who fundraised and contributed to the Ian Mentzer Educational Fund and this Pi Lam family.

PA Alpha Delta has a proud history of taking care of its own. This is the true meaning of “brother mine forever” and “not four years but a lifetime.”
